Vitality points on guided runs with Apple Watch
Vitality rewards workouts your Apple Watch records itself. Many coaching apps record their own instead. Here's how to have a coach in your ear and still earn your points.
Why it matters which app records the run
Vitality, both Discovery Vitality in South Africa and Vitality in the UK, awards activity points for workouts it reads from Apple Health, using your heart rate to decide how many. But it's particular about where they come from. Vitality UK says plainly that it doesn't accept data from third-party apps, only workouts recorded directly in Apple Health or by its partners. Discovery doesn't count workouts that have been edited or created by hand.
On an Apple Watch, the workout Vitality is looking for is the one Apple's own Workout app records. Plenty of running apps record their own workout instead, so the run shows up as that app's, and it may not earn you anything.
How Moonstride keeps your points
Moonstride is built so the Workout app always does the recording:
- Your Watch records the run. Start it in the Workout app as usual, Outdoor Run or Indoor Run. It's a native Apple workout with your heart rate, saved to Apple Health and counted towards your Activity rings, and to Vitality.
- Your iPhone coaches you. Moonstride's pace guide runs alongside on your phone: a target every kilometre, eased on every climb using your iPhone's barometer, turn-by-turn directions on a route, and your music dipped while it talks. It never saves a workout of its own, so there's no second run to confuse anything.
- The two come together at the end. When you end the run on your Watch, the guide finishes with it. Once the workout syncs to your phone, Moonstride opens that run with what the guide measured: your splits and how the session compared with the plan.
Rather leave your phone at home? Send the session to your Watch from Moonstride's Guide tab. It becomes a custom workout in the Workout app with pace alerts for every step, still a native Apple workout.
Discovery Vitality: what a run earns
Under Discovery's fitness points table, you earn points for one activity a day, worked out from your heart rate as a share of your age-related maximum (220 minus your age):
| 30 minutes or more at | Points |
|---|---|
| 60 to 69% of max heart rate | 100 |
| 70 to 79% | 200 |
| 80% or more | 300 |
So a 35-year-old averaging 148 bpm or more for half an hour earns 300. An easy run usually lands in the lower bands, and that's fine: most of your running should be easy. Link your Apple Watch through Apple Health in the Discovery app under Vitality, then Devices and apps; points only count from the day you link it.
Vitality UK
Vitality UK reads workouts from Apple Health once you connect it in the Vitality app, under Profile, then Device connections. Heart-rate workouts of 30 minutes or more earn 5 or 8 activity points depending on intensity, up to 8 a day, and they count towards the Apple Watch benefit. A run that stops at 29 minutes earns nothing, so let the Watch run past 30.
Getting the most from it
- Always start the run on your Watch, in the Workout app, not from your phone.
- Run at least 30 minutes for workout points: Moonstride's guided runs can be set by time.
- Don't edit the workout in Health afterwards.
- Wear your Watch snugly so it reads your heart rate well.
- Keep the easy days easy anyway. The points for one hard run a day aren't worth an injury.

Questions
Do runs with Moonstride earn Vitality points?
They can, because Moonstride never records the run itself. You start the run in Apple's Workout app on your Watch as usual, so it's a native Apple workout with heart rate, the kind Vitality reads from Apple Health. Moonstride coaches you from your iPhone alongside it. Points are always up to Vitality's own rules.
Why don't some running apps earn Vitality points?
Vitality UK says it doesn't accept data from third-party apps, only workouts recorded directly in Apple Health or by its partners. An app that records its own workout, instead of using the Workout app, may not count.
How many Discovery Vitality points is a run?
Under Discovery's fitness points table, a workout of 30 minutes or more earns 100 points at 60 to 69% of your age-related maximum heart rate, with more at 70 to 79% and up to 300 at 80% or above. You earn points for one activity a day.
Do treadmill runs count?
Start an Indoor Run in the Workout app and it records heart rate like any other workout. Moonstride's pace guide coaches treadmill runs by time, belt speed and incline.
Will editing a run in Health cost me the points?
It can. Discovery says it doesn't award points for workouts that have been edited or manually created, so leave the Workout app's recording as it is.
