Moonstride is built so your data stays yours. There's no account, no advertising and no analytics in the app, and we don't collect, sell or share personal information. The app doesn't send your runs or health data to us or to anyone else.
Apple Health
With your permission, Moonstride reads your running workouts and their routes, heart rate, heart rate recovery after workouts, heart-rate variability, resting heart rate, respiratory rate, sleeping wrist temperature, VO₂ max, sleep, steps, distance, active energy, running speed, power and form, and water from Apple Health, and your date of birth to estimate your maximum heart rate. It uses them to show your progress, records and recovery. It only reads: it never adds, changes or deletes anything in Health. You can change access any time in the Health app. Health data is never used for advertising or shared with anyone.
What stays on your device
Everything Moonstride works out or you add is stored only on your iPhone: analysis of your runs, segments, routes and race courses, shoes, workouts you build, your chosen power song, distance corrections, pace guide sessions (including the route your iPhone recorded), your training plan and race goal, the health answers you give when setting it up, and your settings. We never receive a copy, and Moonstride doesn't sync to iCloud.
Location
During a pace guide session outdoors, Moonstride uses your iPhone's location to measure your pace, including while the screen is off. It keeps the route it measured so you can compare it with your Watch's and race it again later. Location is only used while a session is running, and the measurements stay on your iPhone. Treadmill sessions don't use location.
If you turn on directions for a saved or imported route, Moonstride asks Apple Maps for the names of the streets at the route's turns, so it can say "turn left onto Long Street". Only those points along the route are sent, to Apple, not to us, and not your own location. The names are kept on your iPhone so each route is only looked up once. Without a connection, the turns are called without street names.
Motion and fitness
With your permission, outdoor pace guide sessions read height changes from your iPhone's barometer to work out hills, so your target pace can ease on climbs. It's only read during a session, and stays on your iPhone. Without permission, the guide uses GPS altitude instead.
Music
If you choose a power song, Moonstride asks for access to your music library so you can pick it, and later adds it to what's playing in Apple Music when you ask. It only remembers which song you chose. It doesn't read your listening history, and nothing about your music leaves your iPhone.
Insights and Apple Intelligence
The insights on the Today screen are worked out on your iPhone from your runs and recovery data. On iPhones with Apple Intelligence, a short summary of them is written by Apple's on-device language model. It runs entirely on your iPhone: your data isn't sent to Apple, to us or to anyone else.
Files you import
When you import a race course from a GPX file, Moonstride reads the file on your iPhone and saves the course as a route. The file isn't sent anywhere.
Apple Watch workouts
When you send a workout to your Watch, Moonstride hands it to Apple's Workout app on your devices. The run is recorded by Apple's Workout app, as any other run would be.
Maps
Route maps and the heatmap are drawn with Apple Maps, which loads map tiles for the area shown. Apple's privacy policy covers that. Your route itself isn't sent to us.
Sharing a run
When you share a run card, the app makes the image on your device and you decide where it goes. We never see it.
Deleting your data
Delete the app and everything Moonstride stored goes with it. Your runs and health data stay in Apple Health, where they always were. Since we never had a copy, there's nothing left anywhere else.
This website
This website doesn't use cookies or ads. It counts visits with Darkside, our own analytics tool, which runs on our own hosting and doesn't share anything with anyone. It records the page you visited, the site that linked you here, your type of device, browser and operating system, and a country worked out from your time zone. It doesn't store your IP address and can't recognise you from one day to the next. Like most websites, our hosting provider also keeps standard server logs, including IP addresses and pages visited, to keep the site running and secure.
The route planner doesn't send your route to us. The points you tap on its map go toBRouter, an open-source route finder, to find the paths between them, places you search for go to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim, and the map itself comes fromOpenFreeMap. Each sees your IP address, as any website you visit would. On your first visit the map opens at the city your device's time zone is named after, worked out in the page itself; only for an older time zone name the page doesn't know is that city looked up on Nominatim. Your route, and the places you've searched for in the last week, are kept in your browser's own storage until you clear them.
Children
Moonstride doesn't collect personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, for example if iCloud sync is added, we'll update this page and the date above.
